I was asked to do a plate design for Harajuku Gyoza, a new gyoza bar opening in Brisbane. The brief was to design to go on a plate, inspired by Japan.
Japan is known to have quite a few contradictions in its culture; from its wild street fashion and colourful popular culture, to its strict traditions and landscape, and everything in between. At the same time, it seems they all have their place and it appears to be balanced nicely. So for my illustration I created a busy and eclectic mix showing everything Japan. But by bringing it back to just black /white and red, and bringing it into the shape of the inyodo, japanese feng shui, it brings it all into balance.
The illustration is hand drawn in ink, a medium often used in traditional japanese art.
Stevie and Matt, I wish you all the best with your new venture!
