I was asked to do a piece for an exhibition called Stop Flooding My Record Collection: a charity exhibition where artists were to create new covers for old jazz records salvaged from the Brisbane floods. All proceeds went to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal.
I chose to do a cover for Fats Waller’s Great Original Performances. Due to the title of the exhibition I decided to work on wood; as wood is known to not sink in water. Fats Waller is a jazz musician / pianist from the twenties / thirties, and the illustration represents the swing and flow we hear in his music. The illustration was lazer etched / cut into wood. A round hole was cut into the cover, to showcase some of the original vinyl.
A real big thanks to James McDougall, I could not have done this without his help, as he brilliantly produced this piece for me.
